She was on a date with Max. There was no getting around it. If it looked like a date and sounded like a date, then it was a date. Despite her best intentions. In the end she’d given in. She wasn’t particularly proud of herself. Evie, on the other hand, would be thrilled. So would Elena. She couldn’t decide what she was feeling, exactly, but she wished she’d been better prepared. Here she was, wearing pajama pants, a somewhat frumpy sweatshirt, no bra, and no makeup. Super.

The body heat mention had caught her totally off guard. But otherwise, this was good—sweet. The wave of relief she’d felt at hearing an alternate explanation for those reviews had been intense. Hope had welled inside her for a giddy moment before she’d shoved it back down. Trust wasn’t something she parted with easily anymore, so if anything was going to happen between them, they were going to have to ease into it. Very slowly.

Right. Like they’d eased into that kiss.

No. Definitely not like that. Tonight she’d keep it together and hope he’d cooperate. She looked over at him. He wasn’t that far away. There really wasn’t anything stopping either one of them from rolling onto the other’s cushion. Just self-control.

Mother of freakin’ pearl, I’m doomed.

He’d rigged his phone as a movie projector—Evie was absolutely going to want a tutorial—and was queuing up the movie while she sat beside him, fidgety uncertainty bubbling up like a geyser. She sipped her hot chocolate and kept her hands wrapped around the cup, willing herself to relax. No pressure. It’s only a movie. It’ll be fine. Right.

She considered grabbing the popcorn bowl and shoveling handfuls into her mouth as a substitute for both dinner and conversation, but then he pressed play and lifted it onto his lap. Jade stared at it, no longer willing to make a grab.

Max caught her staring at his lap.

“I’m hogging the bowl, aren’t I? I tend to do that,” he said. “Why don’t we get a little closer so we can both reach it?” Without waiting for her consent, he grabbed her cushion and dragged it—and her—until she was very nearly nudged up against him. She stared at those cushions touching, her heart beating wildly with…nerves? Anticipation? It was inconclusive. What she did know was that the suspense was going to kill her.

Her smile was tense and her movements clumsy as she grabbed a handful of popcorn from the bowl now propped on the edge of his thigh and turned to stare at the screen. At least she’d stopped shivering. She very much suspected that once she crawled under a blanket with him, there’d be no getting out. And she really wasn’t ready for that.

“I assume you’ve seen this before?” he asked, seemingly oblivious to the bundle of drama huddled beside him, scarfing popcorn.

“Several times,” she answered, nodding.

“So it wouldn’t be a problem if things got interrupted?” She stopped chewing, not sure how to answer that.

“I mean, if my phone stops working or…something.
